Ottawa's Paul Anthony graces the Woodwork roster with a solid offering of intense deep techno under his alias, Ki. With several strong projects constantly in evolution, Paul is a seasoned producer with a diverse palette of sounds ranging from energetic house, through melodic and moody downtempo, to futuristic soulful beats.
This collection opens suitably through 'Reluctant Windows'. With gorgeous swelling synths and rhythmic noise hits, it builds insistently from a repetitive minimal motif under a looping vocal layer, eventually reaching its final statement with a view through lush synthetic piano chords.
'Soft Exchange' is the consummate centerpiece, presenting the full sound of Ki in all its melodic, robotic, tech-funk splendour. The seamless interaction between percussion, harmonic hits, synth fx and vocal hook cement a heavy chunk of groove that radiates pure energy.
'Folding-Erased' builds on that same enegry with another slice of deep techno. Elements of classic acid and trance make adventurous appearances stencilled carefully overtop, lending themselves nicely to the established mood of the EP.
With 'Cold Calling', the vibes get darker and slighly sinister. Dramatic effects in the foreground lead through a dense series of sonic scene changes toward a tense breakdown. A gradual rhythmic shift gives rise to a steamy, evapourating outro.
A dub version of the title track closes out the EP. Revisiting 'Soft Exchange' with a slightly subtractive approach, Ki highlights the interplay of the synths and the spaces between each element without the vocal, providing a subtle variation, rounding off this impressive collection with a slick tag to the title track.
